Sunil Tomar
Sunil Tomar is an independent investor. He has an extensive investment experience in the technology start-up companies, equities, derivatives, bonds, hedge funds, real estate & private equity. Sunil is also a limited partner in 6 Technology Venture Capital firms.
Sunil is currently also the Founder, President and CEO of Brillus, Inc., a consulting company advising start-ups in the technology space. Brillus has advised companies in the computer security, web services and wireless space.
Sunil was most recently Sr. Vice President Engineering of Ciena’s Metro Switching Division. He was a founder and Vice President of Engineering at Cyras Systems, a developer and manufacturer of new optical switching technologies. Cyras was sold to Ciena in 2001 for $1.1B. He has previously worked for companies widely acknowledged as technology leaders in these areas. At Fiberlane (Cerent), Sunil led the engineering team that developed the world's largest SONET cross-connect ASIC. While at Cisco/Stratacom, he led the team that developed ATM/Frame Relay access products.
Sunil has over 20 years experience in conceiving, designing, developing and delivering both telecom and data networking equipment. His executive experience spans managing the design and development of ASICS, FPGAs, high-density circuit boards and hardware subsystems and software for both telecom and datacom systems. Sunil was instrumental in LSI Logic's development of the ATMizer chipset in addition to developing ASICs for the Apple Newton PDA. At Cellnet Data Systems, Sunil and his team designed packet networking and spread spectrum wireless products. Sunil has applied for 4 patents in the area of telecommunications technology products.
Sunil is also co-founder of TransOral Pharmaceuticals. Sunil led the seed round of funding in February 2002. He participates in investment and business strategy for TransOral and also guides the company’s strategic direction. Sunil also helps other early stage start-up companies in an advisory role.
Coincident with co-founding Cyras Systems, Sunil founded TomarIC, a firm specializing in providing ASICs and hardware sub-systems to communications companies.
Sunil holds an M.S. in Engineering (Digital Systems & VLSI) from San Jose State University, CA, post-graduate Business Management education from Sydenham College, Bombay, India & B.S. Physics degree from Gujarat University, India.
