Steve Bourne, Chief Technology Officer


As Chief Technology Officer of El Dorado Ventures, Steve Bourne actively consults with EDV’s portfolio companies and advises the firm on new investment opportunities. He has been involved with El Dorado Ventures since becoming a Technology Partner in 1998.

Steve is internationally known for his work on the UNIX operating system. While at Bell Laboratories, Steve designed the UNIX Command Language – commonly called the “Bourne Shell” – that is widely used in scripting in the UNIX programming environment. In 1983, Steve published The UNIX System, which is recognized as the seminal text for effective use of UNIX.

Steve also has served in senior management positions at Cisco Systems, where he was director of engineering for enterprise network management; Sun Microsystems, where he launched the Sun SPARCenter 2000 group; Digital Equipment Corp., where he helped to develop DEC’s first RISC-based workstation; and Silicon Graphics, where he was one of the company’s first employees and served in senior engineering roles.

Steve received a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics from King's College London, as well as a Diploma (or Master’s degree) in computer science and a Ph.D. in mathematics from Trinity College in Cambridge, England.
