Coghead Goes Live With DIY Web-Based Business Applications

Portfolio Company: Coghead

Coghead Attracts More than 17,000 to Develop Applications the Coghead Way

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- Coghead today launched its do-it-yourself web-based service that provides a simple, powerful way for tech-savvy businesspeople to create, manage, and deploy custom web-based applications. With more than 17,000 registered developers, Coghead is poised to disrupt the traditional software market by providing a way to create and deliver a business application in a matter of hours or days, not weeks or months, at a fraction of the cost of large packaged applications or custom development projects. Free single-user accounts are now available, and multi-user accounts, which allow multiple users to access and share an application developed and hosted on Coghead, are available on a free trial basis. To register for a Coghead account, go to http://www.coghead.com/.

Capitalizing on the trends toward user empowerment and the democratization of information, Coghead gives the people closest to a business challenge the ability to create powerful, 100 percent web-based applications. Coghead applications require no additional IT infrastructure and can be accessed using any standard browser and Internet connection. Once members register at www.coghead.com, they can create a new application from scratch, or they can start with one of the many pre-built starter applications in the Coghead gallery and modify it as necessary. Coghead members have access to other forms of community-generated content including support forums and discussion groups.

Webware1 is completely changing the way applications are developed and accessed. Coghead recently closed $8 million in Series B funding with investments from American Capital Strategies Ltd. (Nasdaq:ACAS), SAP Ventures, a division of SAP AG, and El Dorado Ventures. Coghead, which will be participating in the Web 2.0 Expo at Moscone West in San Francisco, April 15-18, 2007, is also developing an affiliate program to help entrepreneurs launch new business ventures based on the applications they create with the Coghead service.

“The immediate popularity of Coghead with both users and the investment community is an indication of the critical and un-served needs of this audience,” said Paul McNamara, Coghead CEO. “Today we have a vast population of consultants and technically-minded individuals who understand their business challenges and opportunities, and recognize that large software packages and custom application development projects are too complex, costly or time consuming for their needs. Coghead enables tech-savvy businesspeople to leverage their expertise to create rich business applications. And, because Coghead is 100 percent web-based, the people who create applications can share those applications with anyone they choose on the web.”

Coghead members are developing applications to solve a wide range of business challenges, from managing sales pipelines to tracking supplies at restaurants. Coghead members have developed applications for project and event management; asset tracking; bug tracking; customer relationship management; HR provisioning; and knowledge bases. Coghead members can also create applications to sell to other members, or contribute their applications to the Coghead application gallery to be shared with the community.

“I used Coghead to build a sophisticated private capital application to facilitate interaction between investors, companies, and exchanges in the private capital markets,” said Jamie Cohan, CEO of AllRounds (www.all-rounds.com). “The Coghead system allowed me to focus on developing the workflow unique to the private capital markets without having to build the core infrastructure that is common to multi-user secure web applications. Coghead was the only system that met my requirements in terms of performance, scalability, and data integrity. Having co-founded two internet companies, I appreciate the very difficult problem that Coghead has solved by providing a development environment that allows industry specialists to build complex systems without having to build the infrastructure to support those systems. With Coghead the process of creating a web application is transformed as the design, prototype, and productize cycle converges into one. This convergence has a dramatic impact on a company’s cost structure.”
