Beijing's Public Security Bureau is deploying Strix Systems' mesh networking technology, ultimately designed to cover event venues for the 2008 Olympics.

The rollout is the first wireless mesh deployment in Beijing and allows for public security personnel to log in via laptop or fixed location to see a live event as it is taking place, according to Kirby Russell, director of product marketing at Strix. For example, if a traffic accident occurs, responders can use the remote surveillance system to determine how best to approach the scene. "It's real-time communications," he says.

The Beijing Public Security Bureau is responsible for various aspects of public security, including anti-terrorism activities, crime, security violations and emergency command communications.

The first phase of the Beijing deployment uses Strix Access/One Network Outdoor Wireless Systems (OWS) and Indoor Wireless Systems (IWS) for a range of public emergency-control applications.

Strix' business is taking it around the world. Last month, the company announced that Kenya Data Networks, a public data network operator in East Africa, is deploying its outdoor and indoor systems to create a Wi-Fi service.
