Memory giants Intel Corp. and Micron Technology Inc. are teaming up again, this time being brought together through a collaboration with nanotechnology startup Nanosys Inc.
According to a statement released today by Nanosys, the collaboration will use Nanosys' nanostructure IP to address opportunities for high density NAND flash memory that can be used in consumer electronics, portable storage and personal communications.
"We are extremely pleased to be working with two of the top leaders in the area of non-volatile memory," Calvin Chow, Nanosys' CEO, said in the statement. "Together, Intel and Micron bring an unparalleled set of capabilities that will help accelerate the development and incorporation of our nanostructures into non-volatile memory devices."
"This collaboration, along with our strategic relationship with Micron, further underscores our technology leadership and commitment in non-volatile memory," Ed So, VP at Intel, added.
Earlier this year, Intel and Micron set up a joint venture, IM Flash Technologies Inc., to manufacture NAND flash memory. Of note, IM Flash saw Micron sell to Intel its existing NAND flash memory technology and designs for $270 million and acquire a perpetual, paid-up license to use and modify such designs. Today’s news from Nanosys gave no financial information on the Intel-Micron agreement.
"We are excited to be a part of this collaboration," Frankie Roohparvar, VP of NAND development at Micron, said in the statement. "Micron has taken on a leadership role in NAND technology and Nanosys' technology offers a very practical and promising approach towards addressing the continued scaling needs of the fast-growing non-volatile memory market."
